ABOUT ABOUT

Advance ticket sales have ended but plenty of additional tickets remain available at the door.

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Personality Disorders 101,” a look at the myth, reality, assessment, and treatment of personality disorders, with Brian A. Sharpless, licensed clinical psychologist, visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths, University of London, and author of Psychodynamic Therapy Techniques.

When it comes to personality disorders and the people who suffer from them, myths and misconceptions abound. You can find discussions of personality disorders all over the internet, but many of them are inaccurate or misleading, and they can best be characterized as personal attacks rather than scientific discussions.

Come gain a better understanding of personality disorders from Brian Sharpless, a regular on the Profs and Pints stage. Along with talking about how psychologists and psychiatrists think about personality orders in general, he’ll discuss how personality orders are assessed and treated, and he’ll offer insights into what causes these conditions to develop.

Dr. Sharpless will discuss in detail three personality disorders that are commonly associated among laypeople with “being dramatic,” and frequently bring with them difficulties with self-esteem and personal identity: Histrionic personality disorder, which can make people captivating or even seductive in social settings but leave them upset when they’re no longer the center of attention; narcissistic personality disorder, which actually leaves people much less self-confident than the stereotype of narcissists assumes them to be; and borderline personality disorder, characterized by extreme emotional ups and downs, fears of abandonment, and suicidal behaviors.

Finally, Dr. Sharpless will give some practical tips and techniques to help you deal with people in your life who may suffer from these conditions. You'll walk out with a different perspective on yourself and other people, with new knowledge that may help you maintain healthier relationships. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in. Bring proof of vaccination and a mask as they may be required in response to local infection rates. The Bier Baron will be requiring event attendees to purchase a minimum of two items, which can be food or beverages, including soft drinks.)
