ABOUT ABOUT

This talk has been cancelled. Please look for updates on whether it will be rescheduled for a venue or staged online.

Profs and Pints DC presents: “Our Homes’ Unseen Spies,” a look at how to protect your privacy in an era of smart devices, with Roberto Yus, assistant professor of computer science at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and expert on privacy management in the Internet of Things.

Have you ever felt a creeping sensation that someone’s watching you? Often, you’re right. Every day we are sensed by billions of things, many of which are hidden in plain sight—in our fridge, our TV, our car, and throughout our offices. They know more about us than you might imagine, and many communicate that information over the internet.

Learn about how to deal with challenges to your privacy with Professor Roberto Yus, who, along with teaching data privacy, works on designing privacy-aware data management techniques for the Internet of Things.

He’ll discuss how we live in a world with more than 20 billion internet-connected smart devices and cover examples that are devices you might have at home or be looking to buy. He’ll cover what information smart devices collect about their users and the tradeoffs that exist between protecting privacy and accessing the latest technology. And he’ll guide you on what specific things you can do to take advantage of some of the benefits of internet-connected devices without giving away an inordinate amount of personal data.

Dr. Yus also will talk about what others are doing to protect our privacy. He’ll cover the past, present, and future of data privacy regulations and developments such as the European General Data Protection Regulation and the California Consumer Privacy Act. And he’ll talk about the pros and cons of privacy preserving technologies, such as anonymization, used by companies and agencies handling our data. (Advance tickets: $12. Doors: $15, save $2 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later. Please allow yourself time to place any orders and get seated and settled in. The Bier Baron will be requiring event attendees to purchase a minimum of two items, which can be food or beverages, including soft drinks.)
